BBC News: World's tallest man gets married

Another from Lenny, who although (like myself) has given upon on this blog-pursuit*, continues to regularly send me links to articles she thinks I will dig (which was the inspiration for this blog-pursuit). Generally, I do dig them. This one in particular is pretty incredible, her sending of it to me no doubt fuelled by her knowledge of my fascination with the odd, the bizarre, the extraordinary, hell let's just say it, the freakish.

I sent it to a bunch of people, here are some of their responses:

"Awwww :-) So sweet, and yet so pathetic. It's cool that the guy is using his height for such noble causes like saving the dolphins though."

"The wife is 5'2". It was more interesting to figure that out than to figure out the budget for the grant I am working on."

"That is unbelievable!!!!!!!!" (My highly articulate boss.)

There's an older article about him, about when he saved the dolphins: World's tallest man saves dolphin. That's kind of cooler, what with the video footage and photo and all. Plus, you know, my own cynicisms about the institution of marriage and all would make this one more appealing.

(*I haven't given up entirely. While reading this article I thought, It would be swell to have a place to save all these neat articles. It took me several hours to remember this ancient but noteworthy blog-pursuit. Let's revive it, shall we, you two?)

more fun from alt.british.comedy

"They won't. It was a product of the 70s when racism was accepted by many, wife beating was the woman's fault and institutionalised homophobia was all the rage.

"Thank goodness we've grown up."

I really hope that last line is sarcastic, but I honestly can't tell. Dry British humor is even more difficult when written.

A response to that was:

"Why is it 'cool' for people like the Kumars to poke fun at the British, but uncool for us to laugh at anyone else ? Are we, the brits, not a race ? if not, then what category do we fall into that allows someone to be racist against us ? I'm not racist, I just prefer equality. There seems to be a lack of it these days, and I for one feel in the minority group.
"Why is there no standard bearers fighting for our cause ?
"Comedy, and the BBC seems to be stuck in a rut between Britophobic &
Straightophobic."

I guess he's never heard of postmodernism and identity politics.

This must be the mentality that spawned the Yorkie chocolate bar ads- oh, woe is the straight white bourgeois male, look, isn't he oppressed!

Another response to the first post, and my personal favorite:

"Leave the UK to it's politically-correct, homo-pervert-lov ing, anti-family, anti-white, criminal-adoring,over-liberal Bliar govt.

Let it fill up to the brim with disease ridden, non-English speaking parasites ... all with their hands held out in expectation.

.... then, the rest rest of us (who HAVE contribute d, all our working lives) ... will leave in droves, with what's left of our over-taxed , hard-earned savings ... as we are doing now.

In ten years time, there'll be nobody left here that's stupid enough to work & be taxed to the hilt to keep a MAJORITY o f iliterate, unskilled, feckless parasites.

'Homosexuality is a chosen, criminal, sick perversion. A.I.D.S is the
perfect cure'."

Maybe s/he's right. Maybe bringing back Thatcher is a solution to all these new-fangled hippie-liberal ideas...

Or el se s/he should move to the States and join the half of us that share a similar mentality. (I think it's about time Brits get to say to other Brits: "If you don't like it, leave.") Hey, at least we don't have nationalized health care to take care of th e pa rasites, s/he should appreciate that.

from alt.comedy.british

"It is the height of fashion in media circles to take the piss out of poor people like Vicky Pollard and chavs. I want to see a rennaisance in comedy where Jews are lampooned for a change instead of being constantly presented with Jewish comedians like Matt Lucas and Ali G cruelly lampooning the poor and unintelligent, themes which might go down really well in the kosher corridors of media power but do not necessarily have such a great impact on the streets of Britain. [...] The Jewish influence on our media is only too apparant and so all encompassing that no one questions this bias. In fact, far from being 'hideously white' the British media could just as easily be described as being hideously jewish."

Is it just me or is this slightly hypocritical?
Not that Brits are known for their political awareness...
(And yes, I'm saying this from experience.)
At least this guy's trying, seeing that bigotry against SOME populations is fucked up.

Breakfast on Pluto, a film by Neil Jordan

I've been waiting for this film since pre-production! Neil Jordan is one of my favorite filmmakers, and Pat McCabe one of my favorite writers- together they created, and Neil directed, nearly 10 years ago, the film version of "The Butcher Boy", based on Pat's novel. Anyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am with this film (and book). This is their second collaboration.

BBC America - Nylon

I saw this show when I was living in Scotland, it was kind of lame but it being half in New York fed my nostalgia. Whatever problems I have with the turning everything in downtown New York into gentrified bourgeois white hipsters thing, which this show seems to portray exclusively without shame, it is beautifully shot and regularly offers the most amazing views of both London and New York.

"Dude. It's Anthony Michael Hall."

I don't usually watch TV (I don't usually have a TV), but lately I have been. In fact, I have cable. It's exciting.

I've been watching "The Dead Zone" on USA. It's actually pretty good. And dude. Anthony Michael Hall. That's all I can say. It's all I do say. Every time I see it. It never ceases to amaze me. Dude. It's Anthony Michael Hall.

Can anyone else dig the sheer importance of this?
